How to Grow Faster Than Everybody

We live in a time where standing out from the crowd is getting difficult. Either you have to make a lot of noise or you do something which affects a lot of people (hopefully in a better way). Noise is a valid option. But what to make the noise about? Any nonsensical thing? That’s fun but how long can one have fun. Why not do something that affects a lot of people in a good way. Why not make the world, better than when you entered it. Why not become the best you, you can be and change the world.

So how does one stand apart from a crowd of billions? By growing and affecting change in the world. Not just grow, but grow faster.

Grow faster. Possible?

Everyone wants to grow, faster, quicker, than everyone else. And it is possible. There are a whole lot of people who are younger, smarter, richer and happier than you and I. So what is the difference? Is it just genes? Or is it something else?

I like to believe that it is something else. And that something else, is curiosity and experience. Let me explain.

Curiosity

Think of yourself as a person on an imaginary island. The boundary of the island is the boundary of all that you know and all that you can share with the world. You do get rainfall, or external knowledge, which grows the tress on your island, once in a while. It’s nice and peaceful. But for how long? It does get stagnant and boring, very quickly.

If you think about it, then maybe, just maybe the unknown waters surrounding your island hold the key to to know the limits and limiters to your knowledge island and give you an idea on how to expand. Would you try it? If you’re even considering this option, that means you are curious. The moment you read “maybe”, a spark of curiosity began popping up in your mind. And that’s exactly what we need. It’s that simple. At least the first step.

Curiosity is the lever that pushes the world forward

To be curious is to look where you are not looking. Perhaps, the best place to look is where no one is looking. To even begin to see, is when the world enfolds that which you did not know yet. With that begins the journey of growth. With just a few maybes and a few questions. On to the next step

Experience

Now that you have taken the first step to go beyond your knowledge island, you have taken the dip in the cold cold water. What now? You guessed it. Swim as far as you can and then come back to safety. (Lightbulb moment?)

There is no substitute for experience. We fall, fail and fumble our way through to learn anything new. Yet we continue and we persevere. That’s where the magic happens. By doing things, we go so far out of our own little island, that we finally begin to see, traces of a new island on the horizon.

Experiencing milestones of growth

Reading and writing are great. But doing things is what makes us super humans. If you learn to ride a bicycle. You can teach anyone in the world on how to ride a bicycle. That’s pretty close to being a super human if you ask me. That is competence. That is growth.

So why not do things. Everyday. Something new, something which we’re curious about, something we’ve never done. Perhaps something no one has ever done?

But should one just keep doing things? Of course not. To do anything, is to use your finite resource of time and energy. Conserving them, or using them wisely, is, well, wise.

That’s why channeling what you do and setting milestones along the way, to measure growth, is of utmost import.

We know the ingredients. Time to make the dish

Now that we know curiosity combined with experience while tracking the steps is a good way to grow. How does one put it to practical use? How do I, a person busy with responsibilities, familial commitments and work pressure find the time to even make this happen. It all starts, again, with curiosity.

Be curious of your time spent

From my experience, I’ve noticed that I don’t really know what I spend my time on. I know the things that I do. But I’m often unaware of how much time I spend on certain, time wasters. (One day I spent 4 hrs on youtube on my phone, no idea what I watched). So taking inventory and removing the undesired blocks of time we waste, we take back control. Once we have control we can…

Let your curiosity run amok

Search, read, listen, whatever you have to do, do it. Find the topic of interest that falls in the path of your growth and absorb it like a sponge.

Do it

Once you know what you want to learn, and how to implement it, what’s left is just the doing. So do it. Some practical tips on how to do it:

  • Wake up early. I mean really early. You’ll be surprised to find the time in your hands.
  • Use your high-energy time periods well. Check out I was struggling to make my commute productive. Here’s what helped me to know how to convert your commute time to learn
  • Let your subconscious also work. Once you’ve done something new or learnt something new. Give your mind to absorb it. Give it time. A good night’s sleep usually does the trick. So let your mind relax and the benefits will stay with you for longer.
  • Write it down. Writing helps in clarity of thought and knowledge greatly. Something we’re implementing the Phrazee app as well :)
  • Help others. Dr. Feyman’s technique to knowing how much you learn something is by helping/explaining it to others. It helps.

End of the line

We’ll that’s how you can grow and take a confident step that sets you apart from the crowd.
